About Rob
From the sprawling coastlines of Michigan, USA, to the historical streets of Kanazawa, Rob’s journey is the tale of the technological strides of software engineering and the academic rigours of teaching.
Rob’s connection to Kanazawa started with his academic interests back in 2006. Enchanted by his Japanese language classes at the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), he seized the opportunity for a summer program at Kanazawa Institute of Technology (KIT), an institution with which RIT shares a partnership. Little did he know that this initial visit, meant for cultural immersion and liberal arts credit, would be the foundation for his 14-year-long relationship with Japan.
Despite the global upheaval caused by the Lehman Shock in 2008, Rob found his path leading back to Kanazawa. Through an initiative between KIT and RIT, he was recruited to impart technical education in English at the then-named Kanazawa Technical College (now International College of Technology).
From an Associate Lecturer, he climbed the academic ladder to become an Associate Professor, all the while expanding his horizons by earning a Master’s degree from the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST) in 2015 and finally embarking on a PhD at KIT in 2019.
After 14 years of practical atrophy in academia, Rob performed the seemingly impossible task of building up modern technical skills, securing a job in the industry as a remote Machine Learning Engineer for a startup company in Tokyo. Since April 2023, despite working a very full and busy schedule, he still manages to find the time to continue teaching part-time at the ICT.
About Kanazawa
It’s the accessibility to nature, even within city limits, that Rob praises about Kanazawa. The tranquillity of Kenrokuen and the castle park, juxtaposed with the urban cityscape, captures the essence of Kanazawa’s charm. The surreal art at Blue Planet Sky at the 21st Century Museum is a favourite.
Culinary delights also found a special place in Rob’s heart. The ginger senbei from the Sena roadside station comes highly recommended, providing the perfect blend of sweetness and ginger zest. And for thrill-seekers, Rob suggests trying paragliding at Shishiku Highland, an experience he will never forget.
Looking forward, Rob is laser-focused on completing his PhD by Spring 2024. With his academic pursuits paralleling his passion for software engineering, he remains eager to delve deeper into the world of technology.

ロブさんについて
アメリカ・ミシガン州に広がる海岸線から、金沢の歴史的な町並みへと続くロブさんの遍歴は、ソフトウェアエンジニアリングに対する自身の技術的進歩と教育にまつわる物語です。
金沢とのつながりは、2006年に抱いた学問的関心がきっかけとなります。アメリカのニューヨーク州にあるロチェスター工科大学に通っていたロブさんは、外国語科目から選択した日本語の授業に魅了されました。大学は金沢工業大学と提携していたことから留学制度があり、ロブさんはサマープログラムの機会をつかみ、晴れて留学することに。
金沢工業大学でリベラルアーツの単位を取ること、日本の文化に触れることを目的にしていた初めての日本留学。それが、14年間にわたる日本との関係の礎になるとは思いもしなかった、と言います。
留学後はアメリカで生活していたロブさんですが、2008年のリーマン・ショックによって混迷する世界情勢の中で、金沢に戻る道筋を見つけます。金沢工業大学とロチェスター工科大学の新たな取り組みにより、当時の金沢工業高等専門学校（現在の国際高等専門学校）で英語による技術教育がスタート。ロブさんはソフトウェアエンジニアリングの教員として採用されたのです。
働きながら自身の技術的進歩のためにも努力を続け、2015年に北陸先端科学技術大学院大学で修士号を取得。2019年には金沢工業大学で博士号を取得するための勉強に着手しました。
ロブさんは、14年間の教員生活をしたあとには不可能とも思える、最新の知識と技術を習得。そして、機械学習エンジニアとしてリモートで働ける東京のスタートアップ企業に就職しました。2023年4月からは、充実した多忙なスケジュールをこなしながら時間を作り、国際高等専門学校で非常勤講師を続けています。
金沢について
金沢は、市街地であっても自然が身近にある点を絶賛するロブさん。静穏な兼六園や金沢城公園と都会的な都市景観が並列する様は、金沢の魅力の真髄を捉えていると言います。ちなみに、21世紀美術館の恒久展示作品「ブルー・プラネット・スカイ」のシュールなアートがロブさんのお気に入り。
この地の味覚にも心をつかまれているようで、道の駅「瀬女（せな）」で購入できる、甘さとショウガの風味のブレンドが絶妙なショウガせんべいは、おすすめの一品だそう。
スリルのある体験が好きな人には、一生忘れない経験になったと言う獅子吼高原（ししくこうげん）でのパラグライダー体験をおすすめしています。
ロブさんは現在、2024年春までに金沢工業大学で博士号を取得するべく、集中して取り組んでいます。彼のソフトウェアエンジニアリングを学ぶことへの情熱は尽きることがなく、これからも科学技術の世界をより深く掘り下げたいと思っています。
